My wife and I: or, Harry Henderson's History, by Harriet Beecher Stowe; J.B.
Ford and Company, N.Y. 1871, First Edition:
Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896), the most popular American writer of her
time (Uncle Tom's Cabin), using literary realism to convey the plots in her
works. Harriet and her husband had seven children, two were twins, Harriet
and Eliza. The twins never married and lived with their parents. When the
twins were young, Harriet worried that they were becoming too frivolous;
however they went on to become responsible women, family oriented with
active social lives. Harriet Beecher Stowe conveys her feelings of concern
in this characterization of the young twins in this book; she paints a
picture of the modern emancipated woman of advanced ideas and free behavior.
The characters portrayed with broad dramatic license. Purple board, black
design to front board, with title. Spine, same design with gilt lettering,
ends rubbed with short closed tears, 1/4 inch cloth hole to lower joint,
mild sunning. Green end papers, old private ex-libris plate to paste down,
stained and torn, three tiny scars to e.p. from ex-libris plate. Seven
plates, plus tissue covered frontispiece. Rear has 7 pages of ads. Under
author's name to title page "author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," "Pink and
White," etc. First Edition. BAL. 19462. sm. 8 vo., 474 (last page slightly
unevenly cut to edge) Clean bright text, solidly bound. In protective
polyester archival clear wraps. $55.00

The Apple Cart: A Political Extravaganza, by Shaw, B. Brentano's, N.Y. 1931,
First American Edition:
Mr. Shaw is at his ironic best in this play that pokes fun at the
hypocrisies of politics. The contest between a King and his popularly
elected Prime Minister implies a theme of conflict of monarchy versus
democracy. Shaw: "The comedic paradox of the situation is that the King
wins, not exercising his royal authority, but by threatening to resign and
go to the polls". Dark green cloth boards and spine, white title panel
pasted to spine, blue and red lettering. Spine ends bumped. Clean blue
decorative private library plate to paste down, e.p., mild spotty foxing.
DW not price clipped, green front with portrait of Shaw, white spine green
lettering. Extremities rubbed, with chipping to upper edges, chip to lower
front joint. Closed tear across upper spine. Rear dw works of show. Closed
upper edge tear, small chip. Mild foxing rear e.p. and to both inner flaps.
In protective mylar cover. Very clean, no writing, solidly bound. 118 pp, 12
mo. $18.00
