Biography of possibly the most prolific of maritime artists, followed
by a lavishly illustrated catalogue of his works. Antonio Jacobsen, a native
of Denmark who arrived in New York in 1873, may have painted over 6,000 ship
portraits during his career. His work is widely collected and admired for
its beauty and accuracy in detail. This copy SIGNED by Sniffen on title
page. The book includes a bibliographical essay, indexes by ship and
illustration, and a regular index. In addition, laid in are some promotional
materials from the publisher and two 4" x 5" color transparencies of
Jacobsen's painting of the schooner Kentucky in a envelope addressed to the

A complete list of the known works of prolific maritime
artist-historian Antonio Jacobsen. The checklist includes over 4,000
paintings and sketches, which depict some 2,600 of the steam and sailing
vessels with which New York Harbor teemed between 1873 and 1919. Details
about the ships and paintings are given for each entry. A letter from the
Mariner's Museum to a lender of a Jacobsen painting is laid in, and
accompanied by copies of several articles reviewing an exhibition of the
museum's Jacobsen paintings. Bound in leather-textured paper over boards
with spine and upper board stamped in gilt. Faint foxing to top and bottom
edges of textblock. Jacket has a 1" closed tear at top edge of front panel
near joint fold and a few tiny extremity rubs. $75.00
