*BELL, D. C. /BRITAIN'S MARTIME HISTORY An Illustrated Chronicle/.* Most 
handsomely bound in wine-red half crushed morocco over scarlet cloth 
boards, with the spine in compartments, ruled and dentilled. Keeper, 
Hull Maritime Museum, Hull, UK. No date of publication given, but the 
date of 1985 is stamped in gilt at the base of the spine. Small oblong 
4to, unpaginated. Text, drawings and paintings by D. C. Bell, with a 
foreword by Arthur G. Credland (dated 1982).
     
Inserted at the beginning of the book is a certificate stating that this 
volume "is a signed and numbered edition of 300, each being individually 
hand coloured by the artist D. C. Bell." This is copy number 53. With 
twelve tissue-guarded full page watercolour plates (each measuring about 
8" x 11") of famous ships such as Discovery, China Seas, Titanic, HMS 
Hood, QE2 etc., and each individually hand-coloured and signed in the 
plate. There is a slight scrape to the cloth of the rear board, 
otherwise there are no flaws to the book, which is in near fine 
condition. The accompanying slipcase is bound in matching scarlet cloth 
with "Queen Elizabeth 2" stamped on the front in gilt. It is in near 
fine condition.

This is a very scarce item, no copies currently being offered for sale. 
David C. Bell, is a Yorkshire marine artist, who was born in 1950. His 
nautical watercolours come to auction frequently, and generally sell in 
the 300 to 500 GBP range (e.g. a 9 1/2 x 15 inch watercolour of "British 
and French Ships in Battle" sold in April, 2007 at an English art 
auction for 320 GBP). Altogether, quite a magnificent book with 
evocative watercolours suitable for framing.
