*STRICKLAND, Agnes. /LIVES OF THE QUEENS OF ENGLAND, from the Norman
Conquest, Compiled from Official Records &/ /Other Authentic Documents,
Private as well as Public./* Complete eight volume set bound in period
3/4 leather. George Bell and Sons, London. 1885. 8vo. With engraved
full-page portraits of the queens, each protected by tissue guard.

Agnes Strickland (1796-1874) was an author and historian. She was
educated by her father and began her writing career with verse. This is
her most celebrated, and best-known work, but she also attained
distinction with "Historical Tales of Illustrious British Children"
(1833) and "Tales and Stories from History" (1836), and a novel "How
Will it End?" (1865). "Lives of the Queens of England" was first
published from 1840 to 1848. The first complete edition appeared in
1851, and was revised and re-published several times thereafter in sets
of six, or eight, volumes. Volume I of our eight volume set contains a
very nice full-page engraving of the author. Each volume contains an
extra illustrated title page and engravings of the queens described
therein. The volumes are bound in contemporary red leather over marbled
boards, with complimentary marbled endpapers. The top edge is gilt, and
the spines are in compartments interspersed with gilt royal crests and
rules. There is some rubbing to the extremities of the boards, and the
joints, and a touch of wear to the tips. The spines are a bit darkened.
The joints on one, or two, volumes are a bit tender but otherwise the
bindings are strong and tight. Contents very clean throughout - there
are no former owners' markings. Altogether, a most attractive set, and
quite elegant to behold.
