calf over green cloth, with all edges marbled, and the spines in
compartments interspersed with stamped gilt shamrocks. Published by
Downey and Co., Limited, London. 1897. 8vo. This is the "Copyright
Edition", limited to 1,000 sets, the "Novels" being printed by T. and A.
Constable, in Edinburgh.
Charles James Lever (1806-1872) was an Irish-born novelist and
physician. According to Kunitz and Haycraft, "British Authors of the
Nineteenth Century", as a lad, growing up in Dublin, Lever early
displayed the high spirits and taste for mischief and practical jokes
which remained with him throughout his life. He studied medicine at
Trinity College and enlivened his studies by omnivorous reading and wild
pranks of a relatively harmless nature. His first literary efforts were
ballads and, on one occasion, disguised as a wandering minstrel, singing
timely snatches of his own composition, he collected thirty shillings
before his political sentiments provoked a street fight. His first
public literary success was in 1840, when he published "Charles
O'Malley". Thereafter he was prolific (between 1842 and 1845 he wrote
five novels and many short papers), until the appearance of his last
novel, "Lord Kilgobbin", in 1872. His works were immensely popular in
their time. The first collected edition of his works was issued in
1876-1878 in 26 volumes. This set was published in a limited edition of
1,000, from 1897 to 1899 and is complete in 37 volumes. Included is a
first printing of W. J. Fitzpatrick's two-volume life of the author,
first published by Chapman and Hall in 1879, and bound uniformly with
the other volumes of Lever's Works. The spines of each volume are
sunned, and there is occasional rubbing to the board edges, mainly at
the bottom. A few spine ends are pulled slightly, and there is a trace
of soiling to some volumes. The cloth on one or two volumes is slightly
rippled. In all, it is a handsome set, in about very good condition.
