LADY.
Boston: John P. Jewett and Co., 1856. Fourth Thousand, Original cloth, 
Duodecimo, 231 pages. Good, ex-library.
      A very influential book upon publication for its descriptions of the 
violence of the slavery issue in "Bleeding Kansas" just before the Civil 
War. Hannah Ropes wrote these letters from Kansas to her mother in 
Massachusetts between September, 1855 and April, 1856. SABIN #73143. Bound 
in dark brown cloth over boards with border rules and ornaments 
blind-stamped on both boards, spine lettered in gilt. A few minor stains and 
extremity rubs to exterior. Prior owner inscription dated 1871 is penned on 
front free endpaper. Private library stamp at lower fore corner of front 
free endpaper and title page, catalogue numbers in white at heel of spine. 
Minor dampstaining to fore edge of textblock.    $95.00
