Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de. The Life and Exploits of the Ingenious

Life of Cervantes; including a critique on the Quixote; also a chronological
plan of the work. Embellished with new engravings, and a map of part of
Spain. In four volumes. London: Printed for William Miller, Old Bond Street,
1801. Hardbound. Tall octavos. cxlv, 371; ix, 412; xvi, 391; xii, 440pp,
[errata]. Each volumes with its own 'notes' at the end. Engraved
frontispiece portrait of Cervantes in volume one; engraved map of Spain
'showing that part... which contains the travels of Don Quixote', also in
volume one; and nineteen additional engravings throughout the four volumes.
In a contemporary full polished calf binding, elaborate gilt decorative
borders on the boards, gilt turn-ins, marbled endsheets and all edges
marbled. This set recased with modern leather spines, false raised bands,
contrasting labels for the titles and volume numerals, stamped in gilt;
bookplates; Very Good. // 

An unusual copy of this well-known 1801 edition; the first volume containing
the earliest version of the plate opposite page 74, in this instance titled
'Don Quixote attacking the Biscayner' (rather than 'Don Quixote attacking
the Benedictine monks'); also, volume two with what appears to be a full
complement of the plates in a 'proof' state, as the captions are engraved on
the facing 'tissue', rather than directly on the plate, in the lower margin.
