Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 8908 ) Everett, Edward (1794-1865). AN ORATION DELIVERED AT
CHARLESTOWN, ON THE SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL,
JUNE 17, 1850.
Boston: Redding and Company, 1850. Original wrappers, Octavo, 79 pages.
Good.
Edward Everett is of course best known as the marquee speaker whose
2-hour oration at Gettysburg has been utterly eclipsed by Lincoln's "few
appropriate remarks." Anyone who has read his Gettysburg account knows it
deserves a better fate. This earlier commemoration of Bunker Hill is a
similarly well researched narrative, delivered in typically grandiose 19th
century style. One must remember that this was the height of entertainment
in that era. Also included here is an account of the how the 75th
anniversary was arranged and how it came off. The full cover title of the
booklet is: "Battle of Bunker Hill. Oration by Edward Everett, with a Brief
Account of the Celebration of the Seventy-fifth Anniversary of the Battle of
Bunker Hill, at Charlestown, June 17, 1850," with the account of the
celebration occupying pages 51-79. Mild dampstaining scattered throughout,
covers have some splits along joints repaired with archival tissue. Front
cover has a handwritten title label along top of spine, some cover soil.
