The Four Gospels, Translated From The Greek, with Preliminary Dissertations,
and Notes Critical and Explanator., by Campbell, George, D.D.. F.R.S.
Edinburgh; Principal of Marischal College Aberdeen, Printed by Thomas
Dobson, Philadelphia. 1796. First American Printing:
George Campbell (1719-1796). Eminent theologian, writer, lecturer and
Presbyterian Minister. Born, Aberdeen, Scotland (on Christmas Day), Campbell
was the son of an Aberdeen Minister Colin Campbell. His early education
focused on all the teachings for an intellectual life; along with a firm
foundation in language; laying the foundation for his later focuses:
language; theology; and rhetoric. Although he was to study law, he completed
his theological studies in Aberdeen at both King's and Marischal Colleges.
Campbell became a licensed practitioner of the Gospel in June 1746, he
became as minister at Banchory-Ternan, Aberdeenshire in 1748, which post he
held for nine years. It was during this time that his interest in
translation of the Gospel's grew and Campbell established himself as a
"scripture critic, and lecturer of holy writ". In 1750 he completed the
first chapters on The Philosophy of Rhetoric; its popularity with the
magistrates earned him a position as minister back in Aberdeen in 1957. He
founded The Aberdeen Philosophical Society with four other noted men of his
time whose interests were in the science of the mind. In 1762 published
"Dissertation of Miracles," (a response to Hume's essay "Of Miracles" 1748).
Campbell received the honor of doctor of divinity from King's College in
1764, and in 1771 he was elected professor of divinity at Marischal. This
translation was first published 1789 in England. I believe this edition is
the First American printing. Bound solidly in contemporary calf, five ridges
