Simes, Thomas. A Military Course for the Government and Conduct of a
Battalion, designed for their regulations in Quarter, Camp, or Garrison;
with useful observations and instructions for their manner of attack and
defence. Ornamented with a frontispiece and twenty copper plate plans.
London: Printed for the author; and sold by Almon, Picadilly; Hooper, et al,
1777. First Edition. Octavo. [xiv], 286, [xvi], twenty plates on 17 sheets,
mounted. 

Somewhat primitively rebound in a 20th century cloth binding, spine stamped
in gilt; bookplate, and a few signatures askew. Title page with an old
owner's name scribbled out, one corner missing a chip and repaired with an
old cellotape effort. Unfortunately lacking the called for frontispiece, and
with the copper plates not colored (as sometimes found). However, a Good
copy, at least, of this rare book, published in part as a response to the
American revolution. Simes' other works ["A Military Guide for Young
Officers..." and "A Treatise on Military Science..." among them] are
considered classics in the field, and are all recognized to this day as
useful in re-enactments of the period. Image available upon request (29838)
