BURGHALDER, CHRISTIAN.: THE SPIRIT WORLD. A VISION, SEEN AND HEARD
IN LEWISBURG, ON THE BORDERS OF LAKE PONCHARTRAIN, IN THE MONTH OF
JULY, 1854. by Christian Burghalder. Broadside, with wide margins,
approx. 4to size. It is a vision of the last judgement, in 16 four
lined stanzas of rhymed couplets. Some corrections are made in the
text in what appears to me to be the same hand as the inscription at
the top. That is "Compliments of Mrs. Stewart of Holy Rood Lewisburg"
But it also deals with some other current issues. As here: "I see the
boundary line from whence/ Comes forth a new creation;/ Its law is
Total Abstinence;/ Its mark is Separation. Total Abstinence is
underlined by hand." He published in 1845 a German and English a
grammar of both. Christian Burghalder also published a book of 31
pages of poems, "The World and the Church", printed in the Baton
Rouge, LA, Advocate job office in 1860, which may have printed this
as well. There is, however, no reason why this could not have been a
Confederate imprint rather than an ante bellum publication. Unloc. in
AAS, OCLC, Brown, Hollis, Melvyl, LC, NYPL. Orig.folds, short tear in
margin outside Dec. border, OW VG. $875.00
