A very important early study of Asian natural history. It is the first book
to describe and illustrate the plants of the Orient. It includes the first
description of the Camellia and the date palm. The final fascicule V “Plantarum
Japonicarum” classifies nearly 500 Japanese plants, and is illustrated with 28
full-page copper engravings. Our copy lacks 1 of the added 16 plates, a map at
p. 759, which has been excised. See a long description in Hunt Botanical II,
#427; Nissen #1018; Dunthorne #162.
