18th C. AMERICAN MARRIAGE DOCUMENT

(QUAKERS) Vellum Hand-Written Quaker Marriage Document (17-1/4” x 12”). 
Little Creek, Delaware: 1783. Nicely matted and framed under glass (frame is 24” x 
19”).     $500.00 (trade discount allowed)
The document reads, “Whereas Joseph Price of the Hundred of Little Creek and 
County of Kent upon Deleware [sic] and son of Isacher Price late of the City 
of Philadelphia and Province of Pennsylvania Deceased and Rosanna Ashburnham 
Widow of William Ashburnham late of the Borough of Wilmington and County of 
Newcastle upon Deleware Deceased; having Declared their Intentions of Marriage 
with each other before several Monthly Meetings of the People Called Quakers at 
Wilmington aforesaid, according to the good order used amongst them and having 
consent of Friends and relations concern’d their said proposals was allowed of 
by the said Meetings—
“Now these are to certify whom it may concern that for the full accomplishing 
their said Intentions this twelfth day of the sixth Month in the year of our 
Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty three they the said Joseph Price 
and Rosanna Ashburnham appeared in a publick Meeting of the said People at 
Wilmington also and the said Joseph Price taking the said Rosanna Ashburnham by the 
hand did in Solemn Manner openly declare that he took the said Rosanna 
Ashburnham to be his wife Promising with the Lords assistance to be unto her a 
loving and faithful Husband until Death should seperate [sic] them; and then there 
in the said Assembly the said Rosanna Ashburnham did in like solemn manner 
Declare that she took him the said Joseph Price to be her husband Promising with 
the Lords assistance to be unto him a loving and faithful wife until Death 
should seperate them or words of the same effect. And Moreover they the said 
Joseph Price and Rosanna she after the usual custom of Marriage assuming the name 
of her Husband as a further Confirmation thereof and then and there to these 
Presents set their Hands – {signed} Joseph Price, Rosanna Price
“And we whose names are hereunto also, subscribed being present at the 
Solemnization of said Marriage and subscription have as Witnesses thereunto set our 
hands the day and year first above written. {signed} Rachel Woodward, Sarah 
Whitelock, Hannah West, Jane Starr, Hannah Mendinhall, Mary Hewes, John Berry, 
Bancroft Woodcock, George Sparkman, Daniel Byrnas, Daniel Britt, Samuel Canby, 
Isaac Starr, Joseph Tatnall, Wm. Starr, Philip Jones, Joseph Martin, Joseph 
West, John Cowgill, Daniel Cowgill, Nathan Wood, Jacob Starr, Ziba Ferriss,
