THE PHILOSOPHICAL TRANSACTIONS AND COLLECTIONS TO THE END OF THE YEAR 1700
[-1744]. ABRIDGED... [Edited by John Lowthorp and Others]. London: Thomas Bennet
[and others]. 1705-1747. Thick 4to. 9 volumes. Profusely illustrated with a
total of 229 engraved plates, all (but a few) are folding, plus 4 folding
tables (one engraved). Cont. full calf, Volume 1 in a slightly different binding
from Volumes 2-9 (which are uniform). Some hinges starting but all are sound.
 $6,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
As usual, this set is a mixed edition. Volume 1 is the first edition, 1705;
Volumes 2 & 3 are 4th editions, 1731; Volumes 4 & 5 are second editions, 1731;
Volumes 6 & 7 are first editions, 1734; and Volumes 8 & 9 are first editions,
1747. Editors of these volumes, in addition to John Lowthorp, are Henry Jones,
John Eames and John Martyn. The correct plate count should be: Volume 1 with
7 plates; Volume 2 with 14 plates; Volume 3 with 12 plates; Volume 4 with 19
plates; Volume 5 with 29 plates; Volume 6 with 49 plates and 2 tables (one
engraved); Volume 7 with 38 plates; Volume 8 with 32 plates and 2 tables; and
Volume 9 with 29 plates. It is very common for plates to be missing as there are
many unusual and valuable plates easily removed. For example, Volume 5 has a
very attractive folding map of Baja California, etc., etc. THE PHILOSOPHICAL
TRANSACTIONS... ABRIDGED volumes were a key element in the diffusion of
scientific, medical and geographical knowledge to a wide audience of readers throughout
the 18th century. The contents include the writings of the greatest scholars
of the 17th & 18th centuries. Volumes 1-3 cover the years “to 1700”; Volumes
4-5 to 1720; Volumes 6-7 to 1733, and Volumes 8-9 to 1744. Additional volumes
appeared at later dates.
