Baltimore: John Murphy & Co, 1876. Original cloth, Octavo, 672 pages, 
engraved frontispiece portrait. Good, Ex-Library.
      Early biography of Justice Taney of Maryland, with the portion from 
his birth in 1777 to the year 1801 being written by Taney himself. Includes 
several of Taney's letters which the author was able to acquire from the 
recipients. Justice Taney will always be remembered for the Dred Scott 
decision and for his conflict with Abraham Lincoln, both of which and much 
more are treated herein. Bound in textured maroon cloth over bevelled boards 
with gilt-stamped spine and upper board, dark brown endpapers, 
tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Justice Taney. This copy is from a 
private institution, with minimal library marks consisting of a number in 
white at heel of spine and a stamp on title page. Minor rubs to board 
extremities. Cloth is splitting along top few inches of both joints, but 
hinges remain sound. Endpapers show a few cracks along inner margins. Front 
free endpaper has a few corner creases and a short edge tear at lower fore 
corner, rear free endpaper has a 1.5" tear at bottom edge with some 
associated creases.    $75.00
