[Kaufmann, C.H.] "The Dictionary of Merchandise, and Nomenclature in all
Languages; for the use of Counting-Houses: containing, the history, places
of growth, culture, use, and marks of excellency, of such natural
productions, as form Articles of Commerce; with their names in all
European Languages"

Philadelphia; Printed and sold by James Humphries: 1805.

A very useful dictionary of important trade merchandise in the early 19th
century, first published in England in 1803. The text starts a bit slowly
with acacia juice and agaric (“a fungeous excrescence”) but then things
pick up with agates, alabaster, ale and almonds (sounds like a weekend at
David Letterman’s house), and rolls merrily along all the way to Wax-bees,
Whalefins, white pepper, wine (long entry), woad, wool, and zinc.

A tremendous book for livening things up at parties.

Hardcover. 5.5”x8.5”, 368 pages, rebound in new brown cloth, leather spine
label; new endpapers; several old institutional stamps; leaves browned and
with some scattered foxing, minor for the most part, and only heavy on a
few leaves. [30338] $500.00
