SALMON, William BOTANOLOGIA. THE ENGLISH HERBAL: OR, HISTORY OF PLANTS...
Rhodes & Taylor London 1710-1711 First Edition Hunt 426; Nissen BBI
(Supplement) 1720n; Pritzel 8018. Two Royal Folio volumes (9-1/2" x
15-1/2") bound in contemporary full paneled calf, the first volume
rebacked with original spine and label and the second volume rebacked
with a new spine and label. [viii], 1296, [xliv] pages. Illustrated with
an allegorical engraved title by Van der Gucht after Elias Knight and
1,072 woodcuts in the text. Title page of the first volume printed in
red and black; the second volume black only. This copy with the Index
Plantarum and the Index Latinus at the end but not the Index Morborum,
with which not all copies were bound. While the 4-page dedication to
Queen Anne is present; some copies we have seen also appear to have
24-page introductory matter which is not present here and was never
bound in. William Salmon, a purveyor of quack medicines and an alchemist
as well as an author, appears to have been a most interesting character,
and his entry in the Dictionary of National Biography is well worth
reading. Some scuffing and wear to the leather, with the original spine
of the first volume somewhat dry, but a solidly bound and not
unattractive copy. The text of the first volume is very clean with just
a few signatures exhibiting some browning; while the second volume has
more browning, but on the whole it is mild. Modern bookplates and
signatures on the front pastedowns. Very Good set of the last great
English woodcut herbal. $4500.00
