LORD DUNSANY'S RAREST BOOK, LIMITED TO ONLY 30 COPIES
Dunsany, Lord. THE FORTRESS UNVANQUISHABLE, SAVE FOR SACNOTH. [Sheffield,
UK: The School of Art Press. 1910]. First edition. Octavo, original
bluish-grey paper covered boards titled in black on front panel, linen
spine. 30 copies printed, this being copy number 12. Mild overall
dust-soiling to boards, light wear at corners, endpapers slightly browned,
period heraldic bookplate on front paste-down. Overall, a very good copy.
Dunsany's rarest book. Finely printed in black and red on handmade laid
paper by William F. Northend, with elaborate decorative borders and initial
letters throughout, two double-page spreads with intricate full borders and
illustrations, all firmly in the arts & crafts style. The influence
of William Morris and the Kelmscott Press is obvious in the binding style,
typeface, illustrations and overall feel throughout. A great rarity, with
no copies appearing in the market for the last 25 years, and only 2 copies
found in Institutional libraries worldwide ( Cambridge UK and the
University of Delaware, per OCLC, January 2007). No copy in the British
Library. Not only is this Dunsany's rarest book, it is also a very
beautiful production.
