SHERMAN, John (American, 1772-1828).
ONE GOD IN ONE PERSON ONLY: And Jesus Christ a Being Distinct From God,
Dependent upon Him For His Existence,
Worcester: From the Press of Isaiah Thomas, jun. September - 1805.
First edition. Octavo, contemporary calf. 194 pp, Index, publisher's colophon.
The first edition of the first formal and elaborate defense of Unitarianism
in New England.
Printed and published by Isaiah Thomas, patriot publisher of the
MASSACHUSETTS SPY, an American revolutionary
newspaper which supported Washington and the Federalist Party. Thomas also
performed the first public reading of the
Declaration of Independence in Worcester, Massachusetts. He is also known
as the Founder of the American Antiquarian
Society. Inscription on a preliminary blank "Presented to William H. Martin
1834 Jan 25 by Mr John Martin". Below this
and on a previous page are 4 ink stamps "William H. Martin 1845". One the
free endpaper is the stamp " The Jacob Boehme
Society, Inc", as this copy was previously in the library of Dr. Charles
Muses (but does not bear his usual prolific notes in
pencil throughout). Some foxing throughout, front free endpaper loose but
present, the binding worn and scuffed; hinges
cracking but holding, overall quite a solid copy.
$450.00 USD
Terms: as usual.
