We offer for Sale:

Michaud, J. Fr. (Joseph Francois). HISTOIRE DES CROISADES.
[SEVEN VOLUMES COMPLETE]. Paris: Michaud Freres et Chez Pillet /
L.G. Michaud et Chez Ponthieu, 1813-1822.  612; 587; 551; 683; 549;
712; 821 pp. Illus. 7 maps and 4 plates, most folding. 8vo. Full dark
brown morocco with gilt rules, six compartments with gilt decorations
and titles, board edges decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers.
Graesse 512 (4th ed). Vicaire 804-5. Brunet 1698. V.1: 1813 printing.
V2-7: first editions.

Volumes 1-3 cover the first through the sixth crusades; volumes
4-5 contain later expeditions and general information; volumes
1-5 also contain further documents, 'Pieces justificatives,' at
the end of each; volumes 6-7 are titled Bibliographie des
croisades, contenant l'analyse de toutes les chroniques d'orient et
d'occident qui parlent des croisades.

Michaud's work, an expansion of a preface that he wrote on the first
three crusades for the novel Mathilde by Cottin in 1805, is perhaps
the first great synthesis of material on the crusades, and with its
somewhat romantic view, led to a new interest in the medieval
history when it appeared. Michaud would keep revising it until his
death in 1839. A classic.

Very good or better, boards lightly rubbed, a few spines scuffed,
some corners a tiny bit worn, bindings tight, leaves clean and crisp
and apparently unread, maps fine. A handsome copy. [28929] $750.00
