Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 8666 ) Phelps, Martha Bennett. FRANCES SLOCUM: THE LOST SISTER OF
WYOMING, COMPILED AND WRITTEN BY HER GRANDNIECE, MARTHA BENNETT PHELPS, FOR
HER CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN.
New York: Knickerbocker Press, 1905. First printing, Full cloth, Octavo,
xiii, 167 pages, color and black & white plates. Near Fine.
Frances Slocum was kidnapped by Delaware Indians in 1778 when she was
a six-year old Quaker girl living with her family in Pennsylvania's Wyoming
Valley. Her surviving family members finally found her nearly 60 years
later, living in Indiana where she had married, raised several children, and
completely assimilated into Indian culture. She had lost all knowledge of
her native language and religion, though she distinctly remembered being
captured. She chose to stay with her Indian family after this reunion,
though she maintained close relations with her remaining natural family
until her death in 1847. When her tribe was to be removed west of the
Mississippi she and her family were granted exemption and given title to
their land in perpetuity. Includes appendices. Bound in red cloth over
boards with gilt-stamped spine and upper board, top edge gilt, rough cut
fore and bottom edges. Sun-fading to spine, light extremity wear, last three
leaves diagonally creased at top fore corners. Clean and sound. $150.00
