Abbot, Henry. Archive of More Than Eighty Pieces Including Correspondence
and Documents. 1854-1916. A fine grouping of papers consisting of
approximately eighty pieces pertaining to the scientific and military
pursuits of Union General Henry L. Abbot (1831-1927).

Abbot had a varied career, first serving as a topographic engineer surveying
a transcontinental railroad route then serving as an artillery officer
during the Civil War (wounded at the first battle of Bull Run). At the end
of the war he had attained the rank of Brevet Brigadier General and was
assigned to Willet's Point in New York developing a post-graduate military
engineering school. There he carried on experiments with explosives
developing submarine mines for harbor defense as well as Sims Torpedo. After
his retirement in 1895, Abbot served as a consulting engineer on the Panama
Canal.

This collection attests to Abbot's numerous and varied scientific interests
and includes correspondence to him from Harvard College, the Smithsonian
Institution, the journal Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
Brown University, City College of New York, Yale University, Columbia
University, and the National Academy of Sciences, to name a few.
Correspondence includes some material relative to his transcontinental
surveys, celestial observations, and the Sims Torpedo, as well as exchanges
with magazine editors concerning article submissions, official military
dispatches, and much more. Overall Very Good+ condition. Image available
