Clermont-Ganneau, [Charles Simon]. "LES FRAUDES ARCHEOLOGIQUES EN
PALESTINE SUIVES DE QUELQUES MONUMENTS PHENICIENS APOCRYPHES"

Paris Ernest-Leroux, Editeur: 1885.

A survey of fraudulent inscriptions and pottery in Palestine, as well as
fake Phoenician antiquities. Charles Simon Clermont-Ganneau [1846-1923]
was a French Orientalist, member of the Legion on Honor, and diplomat in
the Middle East. An active archeologist, in 1870 he discovered the Stele
of Mesha, which bears the oldest known Semitic inscription. In the 1880s
he wrote this book, and uncovered as forgeries some "ancient" Hebrew texts
M.W. Shapira had offered to the British Museum (on which there is a
chapter here). In 1903 he was part of the team which investigated the
infamous Tiara of Saltapharnes. This early work on forged antiquities in
the Middle East is uncommon at best.

Softcover. 4.25"x6.5", 357 pages, 32 b/w illustrations; publisher's tan
softcovers, covers a bit worn and soiled; contents clean; a heavy little
softcover in a somewhat fragile binding. [30740] $350.00
