FERGUSON, James THE BRITISH ESSAYISTS WITH PREFACES, BIOGRAPHICAL,
HISTORICAL, AND CRITICAL
Richardson et. al. London 1823 Second Edition. Forty duodecimo (4" x
6-1/2") volumes with portraits bound in full smooth red morocco with
gilt- and blind-stamped borders and gilt-decorated and lettered spines,
all edges gilt. Hundreds of selections from the popular 18th century
British journals such as The Rambler, The Mirror, The Observer, The
Tattler, The Spectator, and The Guardian, the latter three often thought
to have perfected the English essay while commenting on contemporary
morals and manners. Authors represented include Samuel Johnson, Joseph
Addison, Richard Steele, Lady Mary Montagu, and Jonathan Swift, as well
as many others. Modern armorial bookplate of Francis Ormond French in
each volume. Mild, occasionally moderate, scuffing to some spine ends,
joints, and corners, but all covers tight and the leather still fairly
bright. Occasional foxing but contents generally very clean. A yard's
worth of handsome bindings and excellent reading! $3000.00
