WESTMORELAND, William REPORT ON THE WAR IN VIETNAM (AS OF 30 JUNE 1968).
Inscribed by William Westmoreland to William Bundy with TYPED LETTER SIGNED
(Government Printing Office) (Washington) [1969] First Edition. SECTION
I: REPORT ON AIR AND NAVAL CAMPAIGNS; SECTION II: REPORT ON OPERATIONS
IN SOUTH VIETNAM. Illustrated with photos and color folding maps.
INSCRIBED by General William Westmoreland to William Bundy and dated
March 1969: "To- Bill Bundy--/With appreciation of your/valued
assistance and/counsel./Westy/W. C. Westmoreland." Westmoreland was
commander of U.S. military operations in Vietnam from 1964 - 1968 and
played an aggressive role in the escalation of ground troops in Vietnam.
William Bundy had a long, distinguished service in the government in the
CIA and in the Defense Department. He was appointed Assistant Secretary
of State for Far Eastern Affairs in March 1964. His brother McGeorge was
Special Assistant for National Security Affairs to Kennedy and Johnson
from 1961-1966. Both are considered primary architects of America's
involvement in Vietnam. In THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST, David Halberstam
stated that during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, William
Bundy's name "would probably be on more pieces of paper dealing with
Vietnam over a seven-year period than anyone else's." Laid in are a 1969
TYPED LETTER SIGNED to Bundy as "Westy" with a copy of the Index to the
Report and eight photocopied pages of answers by Westmoreland to
questions about Vietnam posed by a journalist. A fine association copy
linking two important figures in America's Vietnam policy viewing the
conflict through the same distorted, rose-colored lenses that the
current Bush administration views the problems in Iraq. Near Fine
