Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9534 ) Custis, George Washington Parke, [Mary Custis Lee], and Benson
J. Lossing. RECOLLECTIONS AND PRIVATE MEMOIRS OF WASHINGTON, BY HIS ADOPTED
SON, GEORGE WASHINGTON PARKE CUSTIS, WITH A MEMOIR OF THE AUTHOR, BY HIS
DAUGHTER; AND ILLUSTRATIVE AND EXPLANATORY NOTES, BY BENSON J. LOSSING.
New York: Derby & Jackson, 1860. First thus, Original cloth, Octavo, 644
pages, engraved plates, facsimiles. Very good.
Custis was George Washington's stepgrandson, adopted and raised by the
Washingtons at Mount Vernon from infancy. His recollections are an
invaluable resource for Washington's private life in addition to giving a
behind the scenes perspective on his public career. This edition is greatly
expanded from the 104 page book published a year earlier at Washington, DC
(see SABIN #18156). Includes an important biography of Mr. Custis by his
daughter, Mrs. Robert E. Lee, giving interesting material about her father
and earlier family history. Many of George Washington's letters are also
included, as are a catalogue of all the original Washington portraits,
Washington's detailed instructions for the management of his farms,
facsimiles of Washington's record of survey and his account with Miss
Custis, and more. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Benson J. Lossing on
a preliminary blank leaf: "Mr. Wm Barrett / with the Kindest regards of his
brother / Benson J. Lossing / Dec. 1859." SABIN #18157. Bound in brown cloth
over boards with blind-stamped ornamental borders to both boards, spine
stamped in gilt and blind, pale yellow endpapers. Some rubs and shallow
fraying at spine ends, fore corner tips have shallow bumps. There is a patch
of slight foxing on the tissue guard to the frontispiece. Title page has a
1/2" closed tear at top edge. Fold-out facsimile of Washington's record of
survey has a 2" tear at upper attachment point, a 1/2" tear at fore edge,
and some mild browning. $350.00
