      Fascinating account of garrison life and the Apache wars of the 1860s 
as reported by a white surgeon posted at Fort Cummings with the 125th U. S. 
Army Colored Troops and the 38th U. S. Colored Infantry. Fort Cummings was 
situated at Cook's Springs and guarded the infamous Cook's Canyon, scene of 
numerous Indian attacks and emigrant massacres. Parker recounts a near 
mutiny at the fort, the murder of a Pony Express rider by the Apaches, many 
anecdotes of the 3d Cavalry, and much more. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Parker 
on front free endpaper. HOWES #P93. Private institutional library stamps on 
front free endpaper and title page, residue from label at heel of spine.
