The General Gazetteer: or, Compendious Geographical Dictionary, Containing
descriptions of all the Empires, Kingdoms, States, Republics, Provinces,
States, Cities - Richard Brookes, M.D., J.F. and C. Rivington, London,
1782, 5th Edition. Embellished with Nine Maps:
Including: Chief Towns, Forts, Fortresses, Castles, Citadels, Seas, Harbors,
etc., together with, The Government, Policy, Customs, Manners, and Religion
of the Inhabitants; also, trades, manufactures, curiosities, longitude,
latitude, sieges and battles; with authentic accounts of Counties, Cities,
and Market Towns in England and Wales, Villages with the days on which the
Fairs are kept. Fifth Edition, improved with Additions and Corrections.
Embellished with Nine fold out maps: World Map; Asia; Africa; Empire of
Germany; North America; South America; England & Wales; Europe; France,
(Africa, Asia, Germany, by Sieur Robert, Geographer to the King of France,
with improvements, engraved for Brookes Gazetteer. Contents listed
alphabetically. Originally published in 1762. Last chapter titled, "The
Dimension and True Figure of the Earth Determined". Richard Brookes, M.D .,
England, 1721-1763, was a physician, and author. He also published various
translations and compilations on medical studies and other subjects. Full
brown calf, red leather title panel to spine with gilt title. Rubbing of
boards and extremities, ding to front board side edge. Hinges cracked, front
board shaky, chips to front joint edges. Mild toning of text, light foxing,
very readable, few pages have lighter type than others. Spotty foxing to
e.p., rear f.e.p. lateral crease. All maps intact, no tears. Text block
tight in covers, clean. Previous owners name with 1786 date to front
paste-down. A very presentable copy of this work. tall 8 vo,. xvi, 700 +
pages. In archival clear wraps. Very Good. $375.00

Standard of Pronounciation; To Which is Prefixed, A Prosodial Grammar.

The Sixth Edition of this robust Dictionary of .18th century Grammar, and
Pronunciation Bound in mottled calf with some type lacquered preservation
(?) stain over leather, particulary the spine; which is rebacked, with
cracks and chipping, can still see gilt. Chips to head and heal, rear board
patch of scratches. Faint pencil erasure to title page. Front hinge cracked.
Pages toned, foxing to preface, readable. Page 7. chipped to lower corner
and side edge, text intact. Damp stain to rear upper corner pastedown, and
f.e.p., lower 2 inches of last page missing, "Finis" stated prior to tear.
Front f.e.p. missing. In archival protective polyester film. 12 mo, 2 3/4
inches thick, not paginated. Tightly bound. Printed for W. Young, Mill &
