Holmes, A. Bromley. "PRACTICAL ELECTRIC LIGHTING"

London; E. & F.N. Spon: 1884. 2nd edition.

An expanded edition of a pioneering study first published in 1883. Holmes,
an electrical engineer (and later founder of an electrical supply company
in Liverpool) notes in his preface-

“Public attention has, during the past twelve
months, been directed to the Electric Light
as a possible means of general illumination.
On the one hand, enthusiastic believers in
electricity have predicted its rapid adoption
in the place of gas, and on the other, equally
extreme views have been put forward denying the
possibility of any extensive introduction of
the new system of lighting, chiefly on account
of its alleged greater cost...the aim of the
following pages is to explain in simple language
the principles involved in the production of the
light, and to afford information as to the
construction and working of the apparatus
employed for this purpose without preference
for any particular machine, lamp or system”.

Holmes also illustrates and describes several types of bulbs and a few
fixtures. Uncommon in the trade.

Hardcover. 5.25”x7.5”, 172 pages, 68 text illustrations. Publisher’s red
cloth with gilt script title and black rules. Covers somewhat soiled,
hinges a bit loose, a little interior soil, but overall a bright copy.
