Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9558 ) Claiborne, Herbert A[ugustine]. (1885?-1957). COMMENTS ON
VIRGINIA BRICKWORK BEFORE 1800.
[Boston]: Walpole Society, 1957. First printing, Full cloth, Octavo, vi, 47,
[48-90] pages, black & white photographs, drawings. Near fine.
This interesting study opens with several pages of general commentary
on the making and use of bricks in 17th and 18th century Virginia, including
typical brick sizes, common bricklaying practices, etc. Part II is a
detailed examination of brick characteristics in specific Virginia
structures from this period, such as Bruton Parish Church, Gunston Hall,
Abingdon Church, John Marshall House, and the Yorktown Custom House.
Concludes with a section of nicely reproduced photographs indexed to the
text and a section of drawings showing various bricklaying bonds, joints,
and specific details from some of the buildings discussed in the text. The
book is quite scarce, about 100 copies having been printed. An added bonus
is laid into this copy: a 1932 bricklaying computer (wheel and window),
manufactured by Sherman D. Bennett and distributed by Fredenburg &
Lounsbury, Inc., which can calculate the height of a brick wall based on
number of courses and various joint thicknesses. This calculator also gives
other useful bricklaying data in static tables and diagrams. The book is
bound in rust-colored cloth over boards with spine titled in gilt. Some
faint foxing along top edge of textblock, prior owner name penned at top
edge of front pastedown, some minor browning in the gutters of both
endpapers. $200.00
