In the next two or three weeks we will be posting a new catalogue on our
website containing TWENTIETH CENTURY LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS, LETTERS, &
PHOTOGRAPHS. Most will be American authors, and there will be some
exceptional pieces. Listed below is one of the items typical of the
general quality of the pieces that will be listed. We will be posting
Nineteenth Century items at a much later date.
RANSOM, John Crowe. ARCHIVE OF CORRESPONDENCE to author/literary
critic Vivienne Koch. Gambier, OH: 1950-53. Contains two AUTOGRAPH
LETTERS SIGNED (ALSs) and two TYPED LETTERS SIGNED (TLSs) with a
total of 6 pages dated 10 August 1950 to 10 December 1953, all on
KENYON REVIEW stationery. Ransom initiates the correspondence with a
long HOLOGRAPH three-page response to her essay about his poetry that
had appeared in the Spring 1950 issue of THE SEWANEE REVIEW. He
admits to squirming at a good many points of detail and goes on to
reject many of her views concerning his poems. In passing he remarks
on Stevens, Cummings, Frost, Donne, Browning, Hardy, and Yeats. Other
letters mention writing essays for THE KENYON REVIEW, proofs, and
parties. Koch introduced Ransom to the poetry of W. S. Graham and was
considered an important exponent of the New Criticism, having written
a volume in the New Directions series, THE MAKERS OF MODERN
LITERATURE, on William Carlos Williams. For a time she was married to
Norman Macleod. An interesting archive with one exceptional letter.
