Cable, George W[ashington]. The Grandissimes. A Story of Creole Life. New
York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1880. First Edition. Octavo. ix, 448pp, [8]pp
ads. Publisher's blue cloth decoratively stamped with gilt on front cover &
spine; floral patterned endpapers. Boards showing some scuffing, with
edgewear and fraying at extremities. A couple of middle signatures nearly
sprung, and altogether a Good copy only. However, with a nice contemporary
presentation inscription on the half-title from the author, "For George E,
Waring Jr./ with the warmest regards of/ Yours truly/ G. W. Cable/ N.
Orleans, May 15, 1883". BAL 2331. // Known for his novels set in New Orleans
and of Creole life, "The Grandissimes" (the author's second book) is among
Cable's most highly regarded works. Contemporary inscribed copies are not
common; and this, to a Union Major in the Civil War, would seem to be
particularly desirable. Image available upon request. (34651)	$475.00
