Hiroshige, Ando: Tokaido Meisho (Tokaido Meisho Hokushu)[Poetic
travels on the Hokaido Road] Kaei 4 (1851) Printed in Edo. First
Edition. The original book was dismantled and rearranged. It is now
bound in cloth covered wrappers, original printed title slip mounted
on front wrap. All of the illustrations were originally double pages,
each with a fold in the middle. These have been flattened out so that
the entire plate may be seen at one time. There are 23 plates, each,
now unfolded, nearly the size of a horizontal Oban. The original text
of a sheet and a half, has also been bound, as it had been, in front
of the illustrations. Each illustration incorporates a number of
short poems. This is a rare title. KSM 382274, There is no copy in
Ryerson, Spencer, MetMu., MFA, Boston. Although it is sacrilege to
say it, in this form, the prints a more beautiful than in the
original one. The fold is largely effaced. There are however a few
very tiny worm holes in a number of the plates. Very Good, in this
form. $3750.00
Keisai, Kuwagata: Sansui Ryukuga-shiki.[Sketch style landscapes] Edo,
Kansai 12[but a reprint of the early Meiji]. 7 10 inches closed, with
59 pages of color woodblock prints of landscape in and around Edo.
Such as places on the Tokaido, Kamakura, Nihon bashi, Ueno,
Yoshiwara, Kanazawa, Shinagawa, Etc. Original covers and title slips
A Very Good copy with no worming, rubbing or discoloration. One of
his most famous books. Heavily Chinese influenced with no outlines to
any of the forms. Done in the famous "sketch style" of his mature
work. Mitchell notes this in all the major collections. Hayashi is
supposed to be a later issue of 1813. Considering the change in taste
in color between the original and Meiji, this copy is surprisingly in
the earlier color taste, and may have been issued before the 1860s.
There is an error in the page count in Mitchell, which would leave
the book with 44 Pp. of illustration, only. Some rubbing at edges,
but Very Good. $1150.00
