Aviation Ephemera: Unique scrapbook circa 1937:
Types of Airplanes. Scholastic Composition book, 8.5 x 6.75 inches, filled
to the brim with newspaper and magazine articles, photos, and ads for
various aircraft and aviation history-makers. Over 90 pages, most with
multiple clippings. Kept by Richard Gookins of Parrish Jr. Hi, Grade 7A
(Salem, Oregon). Around 1937, judging from articles. Young Richard had quite
a passion for his subject and he included photos (with captions) of dozens
of aircraft in this record-making period. He includes bi-planes, flying
boats, dirigibles, fighting planes, passenger planes, etc. Also
illustrations from air war fiction, articles and photos of crash disasters,
etc. Other clippings include a full-page candid gravure-section photo of
Lindberg; Boeings plane No 299 (the mystery bomber) plus an article on the
Las Vegas test-flight crash of the bomber that killed pilot and co-pilot;
captioned photo announcing Wiley Post Flies to Juneau with Will Rogers;
John C. Robinson, Chicago Negro, taking his position as chief instructor
for Haile Selassies air force; China Clipper with first trans-Pacific mail
flight, Howard Hughes with plane that set record 352.46 mph and lost its
landing gear on set-down; Amelia Earharts huge $80,000 flying laboratory
as it takes off from San Francisco on the first lap of her proposed
round-the-world flight. Lots more crashes, military, etc. A few pages have
had sections cut out of them, and of course the newsprint has toned. A
couple of stains on the front cover, with moderate wear to edges, etc. A
unique little snapshot of aviation history as it appealed to the heart of a
boy. $60 ppd.
