THE LOVE AND THE BEAUTY OF WOMAN. Sung by Mr.
Broadhurst. The words Written & Dedicated to Miss
Eliza Simpson by John Clare Esqr. The Music
Composed by George Ware. London: Published by E. W. Whitaker. [1820s]

Engraved score, 12 ¾”, undated, priced 2/. 5pp plus cover leaf. $350.00

“Come give us the health to the dearest on
earth” = first line. Cf , A29 2; A54 283; MC 312; MP IV 30

E. W. Whitaker was the exact name of the firm for
only a few years. George Byron Ware was
responsible for several musicals, most too early
for the song in hand (?). This Eliza Simpson is
not Barnum’s giantess, nor surely the source for
detective Eliza Simpson in the TV Simpsons series

Some of Ware’s musicals:

IN HIS ELEMENT (1808)

             THE H ONEYMOON (1808)

             AMATEURS AND ACTORS (1810)

             BELLES WITHOUT BEAUX (1810)

Peterborough Museum has most of the John Clare mss.
