Philadelphia: William Cramp & Sons, 1902. Original cloth, Octavo, x, 180 
pages, black and white photographic plates. Near Fine.
      History of this now defunct Philadelphia shipbuilding company, founded 
by 23-year-old William Cramp in 1830. The firm turned out many important 
ships, both sail and steam, in the 70-plus years covered here including the 
USS Maine and most of Theodore Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet." Cramp's 
built naval and merchant ships for foreign fleets as well. The book has lots 
of interesting detail on ships built, including a table showing basic 
specifications and contract prices for men-of-war, numerous photographs with 
captioned tissue guards depicting various ships, information on armament, 
information on construction processes, and much more. Bound in dark blue 
cloth over boards with spine and upper board titled in gilt, gilt-stamped 
device on lower board, top edge of textblock gilt, fore and bottom deckle 
edges to textblock. Prior owner has left two name stamps on front pastedown 
and one each on the rear pastedown and rear free endpaper. Minor rubs to 
cloth at extremities, otherwise clean and bright with hinges sound.
