Original [?] plain blue wrappers, a little worn on the spine, front wrapper chipped and torn, contemporary inscription on front end paper otherwise internally clean and Very Good. GBP 2,250

A very scarce locally printed account of the "Great Hurricane" of 1831 which practically flattened the island. It caused the deaths of over 1500 people and losses amounting to over £2 million not counting shipping and government property.

We have been able to trace no other copy for sale over the last 30 years. According to COPAC, there is only the British Library copy in the major British institutions and their copy is defective, lacking the final folding table.

The main text covers up to page 146; the appendix forms another 6 pages and consists of a detailed meteorological journal for Bridge-Town from August 1st - October 31st.

The two tables are:

1 Summary of the Estimated Value of Public, Private, and Slave Property, destroyed by the Hurricane of August 1831.

2 Recapitulation of the Number of Persons - Killed, Wounded, those who have died of wounds, and those missing in consequence of the Hurricane of August 1831.
