cloth, Octavo, xvi, 272 pages, black and white engraved cuts. Good, 
ex-library.
      Scarce historical sketch and business directory for late 19th century 
Washington, DC. Opens with several pages of business ads, 10 per page, which 
are indexed to their full entries later in the book. These ads are followed 
by a 60 page "Historical and Commercial Review
" of the city with lots of 
interesting anecdotes and in-text engraved vignettes. There is information 
on the Washington Monument, art galleries, the Smithsonian Institution, 
Mount Vernon, and more. The rest of the book is taken up with business 
listings which include lengthy descriptions of the businesses, the 
principals, background details, etc. Of course each entry also gives the 
street address of the place of business. All in all a very valuable 
resource. Indexed. BRADFORD #271. Bound in brick red cloth over boards with 
blind-stamped borders and ornaments to both boards, upper board titled in 
gilt. Spine shows fading, ends of spine are frayed, fore corners bumped. 
There is some light foxing to endpapers. Hinges are not cracked. This copy 
from the library of a private institution and bears a catalogue number at 
heel of spine, institutional bookplate on front pastedown, a circular stamp 
at lower fore corner of front free endpaper and title page, and a stamp on 
one other interior page.    $175.00
