*HAHNEMANN, DR. Samuel / Translated and Edited by Charles J. Hempel,
M.D. with a Preface by Constantine Hering, M.D. /THE CHRONIC DISEASES:
their Specific Nature and Homeopathic Treatment/*
New York City, W. M. Radde 1845. Complete five volume set bound in
original brown cloth, embossed in blind. Small 8vo, 1st American edition.

¶ Hahnemann (1755-1843), the "father of homeopathy", was a German
physician, who practiced successfuly in Dresden and Leipzig for a short
time before rejecting the crude medical practices of his time (bleeding,
purging and vomiting) to develop a system of taking a careful history of
the patient and treating the symptoms using small doses of single
medicines. The theory was that, by giving to a sick patient small doses
of a medicine or compound that had produced, in a healthy patient,
similar symptoms, a cure could be achieved. His most important book, was
"Organon der Rationellen Heilkunde" ("A System of Rational
Therapeutics"). It was first published in 1810 and had a considerable
impact upon the prevailing medical practices. The concept of homeopathy
thereafter spread rapidly in Europe and the U.S., where medical schools
were established to teach the system. However, the introduction of pure
chemicals and controlled animal experiments led to the establishment of
more rational therapeutics and the rise of modern pharmacology (see
Lilly, "Notable Medical Books", "Heirs of Hippocrates" 707, G&M 1966,
Osler 2874).

This title is a continuation of Hahnemann's Organon, and deals more with
the application of homeopathic principles, than with the philosophy
behind it. It was first published in German in 1828. This is the first
American edition. It consists of an introductory volume, and four
volumes on "Antipsoric Remedies". Each volume shows light rubbing to the
edges of the boards. The tops and bottoms of the spines are pulled a
bit. Contents are foxed, more so to the first two volumes than to the
last three, but the text is perfectly legible. Binding of volume II a
bit sprung, but hinges tight. Overall, in good, to good plus, condition.
