SF: TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO: political document and ephemera
Consisting of:
Envelope with territorial postal cancellation dated 1897, printed stationery
of the New Mexican Printing Co, addressed to: Hon. Geo H. Wallace, c/o Hon.
M.A. Otero, National Hotel, Washington D.C.

Letter, consisting of two typewritten pages with hand correction in ink, on
the stationery of the New Mexican Printing Co, dated June 3rd, 1897;
addressed to Hon. Geo H Wallace, from Max Frost. The letter states Mr. Frost
’s congratulations to Wallace for appointment as Secretary, and Mr. Otero as
Governor of N.M. Territory. (Frost was Editor of the New Mexican newspaper
and secretary of the Republican Territorial Committee, and quite influential
in developing N.M. politics.) This letter makes reference to some other
political figures and actions.

Handwritten copy of telegram dated June 2, addressed to Senator Shoup,
Chairman ?Com? [Compromise?] Territories, U.S. Senate Washington D.C. This
document reads “Respectfully urge speedy confirmation Otero Governor Wallace
Secretary New Mexico” signed by Bartlett (chairman) and Frost (secretary)
Republican Territorial committee.

Maximillian Frost served as a Colonel in the signal service, U.S. Army, in
1876 in Santa Fe, and later became deputy U.S. surveyor under the auspices
of surveyor general of New Mexico. He served as an adjutant general under
several governors, and led expeditions to suppress outlaws and “renegades”
in various areas. He became owner of the New Mexican (daily newspaper) in
1883 and served on the republican central committee for 25 years. He was
also charged with complicity in land frauds in the territory, but was
exonerated.

There is a substantial footnote about Frost on pp 498-499 of “Leading Facts
of New Mexican History,” by Ralph Emerson Twitchell, Esq. Albuquerque: Horn
and Wallace, 1963. A photocopy is included with this package.

Information on Miguel Otero is available in a lengthy Wikipedia entry at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_Antonio_Otero_%28II%29

This material is all in very good condition with the exception of a couple
of small holes in the very thin paper of the telegram copy (not affecting
text), the envelope torn open jaggedly on the postal edge, and some expected
toning to paper.
