ANON. THE CHILD'S PICTORIAL MUSIC BOOK. : E. B. & E. C. Kellogg,,
Hartford, Conn. & Berea, Ohio:, 1841. First Edition. 12mo, cloth
spine, lithographed pictorial stiff wrappers, [24] leaves, printed on
facing leaves (with blank versos), 15 cm. The first 20 leaves are
all illustrated with a finely executed nearly full page lithograph,
drawn in folk style. The lower portion of each page contains a
measure of music and a description of a musical term. At the end are
four leaves of lithographed music: "Hymn of Prayer," "Little Sister,"
"Sweet Goldfinch," and "Pretty Bee". OCLC locates 7 copies of the
1841 edition [UCLA, Claremont College, Library of Congress, Ct.
College, Dartmouth [has only 16 pages], Trinity College. OCLC also
notes 4 Locs. for the 1842 issue, 2 of which are imperfect, no copies
are noted of any other Edition. This was one of a series of books for
children on various school subjects and includes one on morality as
expressed in behavior. They are all illustrated with excellent
lithographs drawn in the same folky manner. The artist is anonymous,
but may have been one of the partners. The Kelloggs were competitors
of Currier & Ives as printmakers, from whom they pirated a number of
designs. They also produced original designs, which were similarly
pirated by other American firms. They are the only important American
lithographer to produce a childrens' series. Children loved the books
of this series and it is typical to find a copy with flaws, such as,
food stains, tears, missing plates. This copy, with the original
boards and cloth spine, showing some wear at the corners and a little
soiling to the covers, immaculate within, is an unusually fine and
unsophisticated copy. $1250.00
