One of the many unusual items in our new Spring Internet Catalogue now
posted on our website: http://www.erols.com/agvent

MONTANUS, Arnold [JAPAN]. DENKWURDIGE GESANDTSCHAFFTEN DER
OST-INDISCHEN GESELLSCHAFT IN DEN VEREINIGTEN NIEDERLANDERN AN
UNTERSCHIEDLICHE KEYSER.... Amsterdam: Jacob Meurs 1669. First
Edition. VON JAPAN: DARINNEN ZU FINDEN NICHT ALLEIN DIE WUNDERLICHEN
BEGABNUSSE AUF DER REYSE DER NIEDERLANDISCHEN GESANTEN; SONDERN AUCH
EINE BESCHREIBUNG DER
DORFFER/FESTUNGEN/STADTE/LANDTSCHAFFTEN/GOTZENGEBEUE/GOTZENDIENSTE/
KLEIDER-TRACHTEN/HEUSER/THIERE/GEWACHSE/BERGE/BRUNNEN/ALS AUCH DER
ALTEN UND ITZIGEN KRIEGSTATEN DER JAPANER. First Edition in German
published in the same year as the Dutch edition and a year prior to
the English edition. Large quarto (8" x 12-1/8") bound in full
contemporary blindstamped vellum recently rebacked with the original
spine. Illustrated with an engraved title page; 25 folding and double-
page copper-engraved maps, plans, and views; and 67 (of 70) half-page
copper engravings. The large folding map of Osacco lacks about 25% at
the bottom, and the view of Osacca lacks about 20% at the left
margin. In addition there are 15 leaves of text lacking wherein are
the three missing half-page engravings. Despite these faults, all of
the fine large engravings are present and nearly all of the smaller.
Though Montanus never visited Japan, he has based this work on
eyewitness accounts and the result is this very complete history of
the country and its customs, religion, costumes, art, and natural
history. One of the most interesting illustrated books of the
seventeenth century. Very Good copy of an important title. $6000.00
