*FROISSART, Sir John. /CHRONICLES OF ENGLAND, FRANCE, SPAIN, and the
adjoining Countries/*, /*From the latter part of the reign of Edward II,
to the coronation of Henry IV*/. "Translated from the French editions
with variations and additions from many celebrated mss. by Thomas
Johnes, Esq. to which are added a life of the author, an essay on his
works, and a criticism of his history." Published in two volumes by
William Smith, London. 1844. Thick 4to, pp. xlviii, 768; xiv, 733.
Jean Froissart (1338?-1410?) was a French chronicler and poet. It was
his peculiar good fortune to have been on the scene of most of the great
and terrible events of the fourteenth century. His "Chronicles" were
originally published in four books, and cover the period 1325 to 1400.
They are probably our most valuable source for information on the
Hundred Years' War. They were enormously popular during the 15th
century, going into numerous editions in French, and in English and
Latin translations. The standard English translation was made in 1523-25
by Lord Berners. Another, contained within the set we offer, was done by
Johnes, and first published in 1801. The Johnes translation is now
deemed to be the best and most accessible (see Kunitz & Colby, "European
Authors 1000-1900")
This set is bound in 3/4 wine-red calf over marbled boards. The
endpapers and foredges are also marbled. The spine is in compartments
and is nicely ornamented. There is an extra illuminated title page to
vol. I, that appears to have been hand painted. The text is
well-illustrated with woodcuts. The edges of the boards are rubbed, as
are the raised bands on the spines. The rear hinges of both volumes are
starting, but the binding is quite tight, and nothing is in danger of
coming loose. The contents are exceptionally clean and unmarked.
Overall, a most handsome set in good plus condition.
Price: $200.00.
