(BIBLE) Vetromile, Eugene (trans.). OF VETROMILE’S NOBLE BIBLE. Such as
Happened Great-Truths. For the Benefit of the Penobscot, Micmac, and Other Tribes
of the Abnaki Indians. Old Town, Indian Village, and Bangor... New
York-Village: Rennie, Shea & Lindsay. 1860. First edition. Sm. 8vo. (2),xii,572pp. With
two title pages, 1 in English and 1 in Abnaki. Illustrated with an engraved
frontispiece portrait of the author, 11 added plates (10 are tinted lithographs by
T. W. Strong depicting Indian scenes), and 123 full-page biblical woodcuts,
plus numerous text woodcuts and decorations. Orig. purple textured cloth, gilt,
lightly rubbed. Occasional browning due to the uneven quality of the paper
stock. Overall, a fine copy of a very scarce book written for young Indian
readers. $1,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
Vetromile (1819-1881) was a missionary to the Indians of Maine and the
Maritime Provinces. He also authored other translations for other Indian tribes such
as the Algonquin.
