BENNETT, John Whitchurch. FISHES OF CEYLON; A SELECTION FROM THE
MOST REMARKABLE AND INTERESTING OF THE FISHES FOUND ON THE COASTS OF
CEYLON.... London: Longman, Rees, et. al. [1834]. Second Edition.
Quarto (10" x 13"). Five of the original six parts (lacking Part Six)
in original printed wraps with each part containing five hand-colored
plates except Part One which lacks Plate Two. A total of 24 of the
original 30 plates are present with a page of text for each plate.
Included are the prospectuses for Parts Two, Four, and Five. First
published in 1830, this second edition is unaltered. The plates are
absolutely stunning with strong, gorgeous hand-coloring heightened
with gum arabic and are from drawings made from living specimens in
the southern part of the island of Ceylon. British Museum of Natural
History Catalogue p. 130; Wood p. 231: "a well-known and important
treatise." Chipping to the wraps, with a few loose covers and two
parts mostly disbound. The plates themselves are very nice, with a
usually faint vertical crease running through most of them but not
affecting their visual appeal. Very wide margins, eminently suitable
for framing. $4000.00
