1.  LAYARD, G. S. AND SPIELMANN, M. H.  KATE GREENAWAY WITH ORIGINAL
PENCIL SKETCH. London: Adam and Charles Black, 1905. Illustrated by
an original pencil sketch of two little girls dancing and a color
frontispiece and fifty-three color plates after Kate Greenaway, with
identifying tissue guards, and many black and white illustrations,
including thirty-four half-tone plates. de Luxe edition. #336/500
copies. Original white vellum-like cloth decorated with blindstamped
rules around abstract florals and gilt lettering. End papers are
embellished with illustrations in color from a wallpaper design by
Kate Greenaway. Signed by her brother, John Greenaway twice. Large
quarto (10 1/2 x 8 1/8 inches. [xix, [1], 300, [1], [3, blank] pgs.]
Very good. Very nice copy with the following defects: evenly
sun-darkened spine and slight soiling to boards. Foxing to edges and
prelims, including the original drawing. Kate Greenaway (1846-1901)
died in November 1901, at a time when her illustrations were out of
favor. Her brother sought to restore her popularity, after her death,
by an exhibition of her work and then by this beautiful work. Thomson
400.  $2300.00 {73269}
