POE, EDGAR ALLAN. THE WORKS . . . WITH NOTICES OF HIS LIFE AND
GENIUS. BY N. P. WILLIS, J. R. LOWELL, AND R. W. GRISWOLD . . .
VOLUME I, TALES [ VOLUME II, POEMS AND MISCELLANIES; VOLUME III, THE
LITERATI . . . TOGETHER WITH MARGINALIA, SUGGESTIONS, AND
ESSAYS. WITH A SKETCH OF THE AUTHOR BY RUFUS WILMOT GRISWOLD.]
New York: J. S. Redfield, 1852 (Vol. 3 has the added imprint of J. B
. Mussey & Co., Boston.) Matching vertically ribbed cloth bindings,
7 1/2 X 5 inches,
blindstamped decorations on both covers and spines, spines printed in
gilt, top
1/4 inch of vol. 2 worn, otherwise very good, sound copies with just
slight wear, a few leaves in vol. 1 carelessly opened, some
foxing. Frontispiece in volume 1.
Early edition of this important work; a 4th volume (not present) was
published later, in 1856. (Griswold's infamous "Memoir" contains
references to Poe's
"gambling, intemperance and other vices," describing him as living "a
very dissipated life" while at the University of Virginia,"the
wildest and most reckless student of his class," &c. There has been
much speculation as to why Griswold, Poe's literary executor, should
have chosen to portray Poe in this dubious
light.) $390.00 (Trade Discount Available)
