second. Patrick W. O'Neal's job of journey-work, 
being a metrical piece. Endited upon the spur of 
the occasion, as it occurred in the well of 
Captain Burrow's fishing-smack, on the 29th of 
August, 1805."--p. [143]-276.Although the cats 
and mice are naturalistically drawn and etched, 
in action, they are meant as a metaphor for 
American political campaigns. Sabin, 43344, the 
First American Cat book ,Johnson 176 [for DCJ], 
Necker[cat books] 1266, who says "Two
engravings
 
on the Kilkenny cats are very good." "The 
Introduction contains three cat poems: Gray's 
well-known cat poem. On the death of an admired, 
must esteemed and ever lamented cat; the young 
cat." "
the verse reminiscent of Trumbull, Barlow 
and other early 19th century cut-ups whom pious 
professors of American letters refer to as 'The 
Hartford Wits.'" This is also the earliest work 
of D. C. Johnston which, though rare on the 
market, does come up from time to time. His one 
earlier book illustrations are known by only one 
copy. In all original condition in original gray 
boards and spine, printed paper label. Although 
the boards are well attached, there are 
significant losses of the gray paper at both the 
crown and foot of the spine, uncut, with an 
owner's pencil signature on the front free EP.  $750.00
