Prior Matthew, The Poetical works of Matthew Prior, Vol. I & II, William
Pickering, London, 1835
Two full calf volumes of Restoration period Poet, Matthew Prior; 1664 -
1721. Prior held various diplomatic posts, and in 1700 entered parliament
with the Tories. He was Ambassador at Paris when he was recalled at the
death of Queen Anne in 1715, and imprisoned for two years (at which time he
composed "Alma or the Progress of the Mind" (1715); a skeptical and
humorous poem for which he is best known today. A folio edition of his work
was published in 1719 and secured him a profit of 4000 guineas. He died in
7921 in Down Hall which he had purchased two years previously. Many
authorities on Prior believe his work stands alongside Swift. He is buried
in Westminster Abbey, where his monument may be seen in Poets Corner. Volume
I begins with Prior's biography by Rev. J. Mitford. Gilt trim border, gilt
decorations to panel spine, black title panel to spine with gilt lettering.
Volume I title panel 3/4 inch rub, P missing. Marbled end papers & page
edges. Inside board upper corner small ex-libris plate with Old English
letter B & no. 819. Remarkably clean text & solidly bound. Mild rubbing of

Ingoldsby, Thomas Esq. The Ingoldsby Legends Or Mirth and Marvels, First
Series, George Routledge and Sons, London, 1889
In two volumes series I & II, 3/4 leather. A collection of humourous &
macabre stories, originally published 1840 in three series between 1840
&1847. Charming illustrations by Cruikshank & other artists. In verse, story
& prose form: The Hand of Glory; Leech of Folkestone; The Witches' Frolic;
The Jackdaw of Rheims; Legends of France; Legends of Spain; Legends of
Haymarket, etc. An early Victorian parodist best known for his humorous
verse and fiction, "Thomas Ingoldsby" was the pen name of the writer and
Anglican priest Richard Harris Barham. Bound in 3/4 dark brown calf, floral
pattern boards, gilt title panel & author to spines. Small chip to lower
front & rear corner & lower end spine & rear edge, all else vg+. Floral
e.p., each with frontispiece. Original 1840 Richard Bentley title page
following, Routledge title page. Solidly bound, remarkably clean text.

Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), Author of 'The Ingoldsby Legends',
Pseudonym of Thomas Ingoldsby. In 1837 he began in Bentley's Miscellany,
under his pseudonym, a series of parodies of country superstitions, medieval
legends, and contemporary foibles.
Ingoldsby Legends were published in book form in 1840. Two very nice

Braddon, Mary Elizabeth , The Golden Calf and Rupert Godwin, Two Volumes;
Stereotyped Edition, London, Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., 1893

A scarce two volume set of Mary E. Braddon's works. The Golden Calf (1883),
a mystery; and Rupert Godwin, (1867)(a Tale of Incident), first serialized
in periodicals. Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915), was one of England's
most beloved and prolific writers of the Victorian period. She wrote over 80
novels, 5 plays, and numerous short stories and poetry. Her works which were
outside of rigid Victorian morals were often sensationalized. Three quarter
blue calf with blue and brown marbled boards. Brown leather title panel to
spine, with gilt lettering, spine gilt stamped decoration. Mild rubbing of
extremities, most to joints. Rupert Godwin, rubbing of gilt, surface cracks
with mild rubbing of leather. Corner edges scuffed. Olive green end papers,
previous owners decorative ex-libris plate to paste down of both issues.
Stain to paste down below book plate, on Rupert Godwin, (removal of
booksellers sticker?) Light foxing of verso e.p. and blank facing pages.
Else both very clean text, solidly bound. Two very nice volumes of Braddon's

Stevenson, Robert Louis; Illustrated with Woodcuts By Robert Louis
Stevenson, Preface by Lloyd Osbourne; Moral Emblems and Other Poems Written;

Children's poems Stevenson had written in Davos, Switzerland, in 1881-82,
for his stepson Lloyd Osbourne, then aged 12, to print on a small handpress.
Poems individually originally printed in pamphlet form. RLS was still a
struggling writer at this time. Lloyd Osbourne (1868-1947) RLS stepson, and
author collaborated with Stevenson on three novels. First Printed at the
Davos Press by Lloyd Osbourne and with a Preface by the Same. Publishers
buckram cloth backed boards, grayish, tan spine, pastedown engraved title
panel to front board, small pastedown panel to spine. Title panels toned,
spine panel letters randomly faded, few mild stains to board edges. Small
superficial hole to spine edge near gutter. E.p. foxed, previous owners name
in very small neat lettering to pastdown, with 1/4 inch piece of tape to
upper pastedown. Text and woodcuts clean, tightly bound. First Thus. 12 mo,

Maroon cloth boards and spine, blind stamped corners and area near spine.
Mild faded and pale white mark, 1 1/2 inch long. Gilt sunned, spine ends
bumped, small closed tears. Rear hinge 6 inch cloth tear, rubbing of
extremities. Text block secure in covers, boards shaky.4to 1436 pp. $55.00
