*SCOTT, R. McNair and T. H. White. /DEAD MR. NIXON/.* Cassell and
Company Ltd., London. 1931. Bound in original
royal blue cloth with red spine lettering.1st edition, 8vo, pp. 284.
Terence Hanbury White (1906-1964) is best known for his popular
re-telling of the Arthurian legend in "The Once and Future King" and
"The Sword in theStone", etc. He co-wrote this curious murder mystery
title when he was but 25, having recently enrolled at Cambridge
University. It was his second novel (out of 25, or so), preceded only by
a book of poems and the 1929 novel "The Green Bay Tree". Virtually
nothing is known about Scott, his co-author, other than he wrote several
articles for literary magazines in the thirties, and a 1931 novel with
the curious title "Misogyny over theWeekend". White published two other
mysteries, in 1932 and 1935, before leaving the genre entirely. This is
an extraordinarily scarce title. WorldCat shows only three copies in
librairies worldwide. There are no records of it coming to auction. For
White completists, it is a "must have".
Our copy is in the original binding, which shows scuffing and light
soiling to the boards. The tips are a bit bumped, and there is a tiny
tear to the rear spine end. The rear board is a bit bowed. Former
owner's name in pencil on front free endpaper (could be erased) - no
other markings. Foredges a bit spotted. Binding slightly sprung, but
nothing loose, or likely to become so with careful handling. Altogether,
a good copy. No dust jacket. Hubin, Crime Fiction, p. 424; Bourgeau, The
Mystery Lover's Companion. p. 184 (mentioning only White's later
mystery, "Darkness at Pemberly" [1932] and describing him as, at that
date, being "an unknown author").
Price: $750.00
